DS 3:10 to Yuma

The 2007 remake of 3:10 to Yuma is indeed a "remake" in many respects, but the film contains several critical differences which set it apart from the 1957 original. The most ostensible difference is the portrayal and role of the alpha male cowboy. The alpha male cowboy in the remake is much less respected, physically weaker and feminized. Dan's oldest son does not hold his father in high regard by any means, and Dan essentially has to prove himself to get his son's respect. This contrasts to the 1957 original, in which Dan’s sons idolize him and treat him with great respect. Even his wife, the role of which in Western's is typically subverted, has lost respect for him and "no longer looks at him the way she used to." Dan, of the 2007 version of the film, is desperate for respect from his family and community, but also from himself.

Physically speaking, while Dan still has crack-shot aim, he is burdened by his bum leg in the 2007 version. He is forced to sell his ability to aid in bringing Ben Wade to the train station. He also prove himself to his family and to his community. In contrast, the Dan of the 1957 version is renown for his toughness and superior gunsmanship.
