The role of sidekick is seen in alot of the Western genre films and it is a role that is important for the alpha male cowboy. It is evident in the films that the sidekick is always next to the alpha male cowboy whenever he is needed. Obedience is one key characteristic that the sidekick has and gives the alpha male cowboy an advantage in surviving throughout the movie. While the alpha male takes the glory in helping innocent individuals, the sidekick is supporting and taking care of the work that allows the alpha male to accomplish such achievements. Similar to the alpha male, the sidekick is courageous and powerful, and remains loyal to the alpha male cowboy.
It is easy to say that in Gunfight at the OK Corral, the sidekick can be portrayed nearly as equal to that of the alpha male cowboy. Doc Holliday, who plays the sidekick in the film, is always in the action scenes ready to do some shooting. He is as skillfull as the alpha male, Wyatt Earp, in handling a gun, and is shown to be the one factor that decides the outcome of the fight. He is loyal like any other sidekick would be to the alpha male because he is always ready to fight for Wyatt, regardless of whether he is sick or not. Even though Doc Holliday is meant to be the sidekick in the film, he is worthy and has the qualities of being an alpha male.
Another film that shows the role of sidekick is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. In the film, there is an obedient individual, Pompey, who serves the alpha male cowboy. In situations of danger, the sidekick is always ready to lend a helping hand to the alpha male by passing guns and providing plans, which gives the alpha male the advantage in surviving fights. By supporting the alpha male on the side, Pompey is an essential factor in allowing the alpha male cowboy get all the glory for helping people.
